Calling all cyclists!

Cyclists! What do you do when you're in transit?
I wanted to do a feature on my blog about this.... At a push I'd have to compare my cycle journeys to being in the shower: I'll finish off conversations with witty come-backs I didn't have at the time, hum or sing to myself (and sometimes make up songs too, not that I'm much of a composer!), relive past embarrassments, plan my day/shopping/etc.... It's an opportunity for me to catch up with myself. I rarely listen to music, mostly because I constantly use my hearing to stay aware of what's going on around me.

I was curious as to how other people use their cycle time - do you listen to music? catch up on calls (hands-free of course!)?

Please let me know if you'd rather your comment were not used for Furs, Flowers and Lace cycle across London. Even so, please respond anyway as I would love to know!

Some photos in celebration of Bike to Work Week. Or, too bad life is so beautiful.

Did you know this week is National Bike to Work Week? I didn't. I'm sort of oblivious to these things because nine months out of the year for me is national bike to work week. But! To get in the spirit of things, I biked home via the long and winding lakefront bike path, with my phone in one hand, madly snapping photos and wobbling all over the place.

This is the result.

None deathwish. Stop that.Collapse )

Please commiserate with me

I love my cats.  They are wonderful, fabulous, loving creatures.  I may have to kill them.

I went into my walk-in closet the other day and noticed a faint unpleasant odor.  Since I was running late for something (as usual), I ignored it and went merrily on my way.  Several days later I noticed the odor again.  And since I had nothing left to be late for that day I decided to investigate.  My wonderful, fabulous loving cats had utilized a large plastic tub in my closet as a litter box.  They used it for both intended uses of litter boxes.

I was not happy.  I was not pleased.  In fact, I was a bit irate.  But I knew that the plastic tub only had some old sweatpants, and some summer shorts.  So no big deal, right?  Not quite.  In that tub were not just shorts, but bike shorts.  3 pairs of padded bike shorts, 1 padded short liner.

I am not a small woman.  Far from it.  And it's hard to find decent plus size bike shorts at a decent price.  So these are among the most expensive items of clothing that I own.  I was not happy.

I have washed the clothes several times.  I used regular detergent and OxyClean.  They smell fine to me, now.  But I am worried about that first long bike ride in them when I start sweating.....and hold my breath to see what happens next.  Literally.

So, please commiserate, laugh at me, offer me suggestions.....

(Side note:  the reason the cats used the tub was the fact that the door for their covered litter box would get stuck sometimes, which I didn't realize.  I just got this one for them in December.  So I can't be too mad at them about this.  And I did not take it out on them at all.  Except maybe for waking them up during a nap or two over the weekend.)

Let me start by saying I WANT TO GO BACK ON VACATION!!!!  I have barely been on my bike since I've been home.  It is very, very humid here.  I have to do something called "work" in order to support my vacationing.  It's all very tough.

Biking Sandals

I have been thinking about buying some of those funky biking sandals.  But they are expensive!!!  Does anyone have experience with a specific brand that they would/wouldn't recommend?

Also, a friend of mine bought a Teva lookalike from Target a few years ago that she uses for biking, and she really likes them.  Does anyone have any experience with something like that?

Right now I don't clip into my pedals, so it's not a huge consideration, but it is something I'm going to try to keep in the back of my mind.

I have short, chin length hair. It's too short to put up in any kind of ponytail, but long enough to blow in my face while I ride. Anyone find any good methods of dealing with this?
